The BBC 'Brand and Ross' Argument.

As a media student I feel that I can have a say on this subject and see it frm both points of view.

Firstly, Russell Brand and Jonathon Ross made a mistake, yes they should not have made such a sexually orientated joke to one of the classic actors from the BBC, neither should it have been about his family members, but at the end of the day, it was a joke. A pre-recorded joke none-the-less. If the BBC were really not happy with this then why was it broadcast in the first place? Most people I have spoke to have simply said that it was a silly thing to do and that the two comedians should apologise and that be that. Well, they have said sorry, yet the issue still hangs around. As for suspending such a popular and funny programme as Friday night with Jonathon Ross I think that was a mistake on the BBC's part. Such a popular programme will surly lose them audience figures and with the overreactment of the whole situation I can guess that they have lost a lot of viewers as it is.
Another point is that anyone that has seen Russell Brands' shows such as Ponderland know that his sense of humour very often takes a sexually orientated path, that is one of his trade marks. If anyone does not like this type of humour they should know not to watch him and therefore I do not understand how he got so many complaints.
I can see how the joke was taken as offensive and how it may have been taken too far. Leaving a voicemail was probably not a clever thing to do, if it had just been said in jest then the matter would probably not be where it is now. The BBC did just do what they thought was best, after all the problems television broadcasters have had lately, it is no surprise that they took such drastic action so quickly.
So, maybe they did do the right thing to keep their conscience clean, and keep the OFCOM happy as well as their viewers, but I really do think that they should let both the comedians come back soon, they have apologised, what else can they do? As for their future career, well I thin they will be ok. In a few years time it will be a passing joke for them and we can all forget the situation and carry on the way the BBC has always done.
